Dovo's shears (a term hair stylists use for hair-cutting-specific scissors) come in a billion varied flavors of length (usually 5", 5.5", or 6"), edge type (corrugated, razor sharp, hollow ground, hollow ground and honed, hollow ground and honed and semi-convex blade surfaces, and finally the ultimate new pinnacle, hollow ground and honed and fully convexed blade planes), with or without finger rest (we only stock 'em with it), with or without adjustment for tension, and color. They're made in Solingen, Germany, from Swedish steel (this term actually refers to the specification or 'recipe' of the steel, but the raw steel's always sourced within the European Union).
For home use, don't be afraid to try a 'corrugated' edge model such as #16. I wasn't scared to give it a go myself, on my own head and my kids, and was surprised how easy it is to make a good haircut by merely starting with a topographic map of the hairstyle I want and a thorough braille-like examination of length uniformity with my fingers. Where the hair's too long, I pinch some between the index/middle finger and bring the scissors just above there...I use a similar methodology to straight razor shave the parts of my face which I can't really see due to some vision eccentricities. Corrugated shears don't allow the hair to slide around, which is nice because even the sharpest of non-corrugated models tend to do this a bit, but do be aware as a professional stylist that corrugation is in a sense tearing the ends of the hair, and fine/fragile hair is better suited to non-corrugated edges.
Among the non-corrugated models, Dovo's 'hollow ground' units will have the inner blade surfaces be slightly curved, so that only the outer boundaries of the inner blade surfaces come into contact with one another - on a non-hollow-ground unit, the inner blade surfaces are entirely flat. Furthermore, "hollow ground and honed" in Dovo-speak means that in addition to the inner blade plane being hollowed out in the middle, they've also been honed upon their very edges.
Dovo's "Micro Motion" models have a Teflon pressure plate spring-loaded into a little rubber ring. It puts more pressure on the end of the blades' intersection, and less towards the joint. While the 'base' models are nothing to sneeze at and work for many stylists in daily professional use worldwide, the Micro Motion certainly does give a distinctly communicative manner to the action of the blades' opening and closing. Control over small-range 'scissorings' seems much easier.
Just so you're aware, Dovo's cutesy little names for the various models don't really mean anything...they just assigned names to their various combinations of attributes because most can remember a name better than they can a seemingly random number. There is only one standard of "hollow ground and honed", for example; whether the scissor assigned this quality is called "Elitaire" or "Keen Cut" or "Senso Cut", it is always the same function of edge.
The #16 Models | ||
![]() | ||
| Dovo's 16**6 models are
their most popular for home
use; my wife's been cutting my hair with the 16556 for a few months now and I've no complaints. The 16**6 series blades are finely corrugated, to allow good sharpness and long-lasting performance. They have a cutting angle of ~35°, Dovo's standard on traditional models, and are favored by some old-school barbers because you can both cut and hold the hair a second.

The Dovo 715 models-5/5.5/6" lengths-offer a classic profile, a layer of rubber for the ring used by the middle finger, a finger rest, and a classic 35° non-corrugated cutting angle that's easy as pie to maintain. They use ice-tempered stainless steel, which makes for an edge that takes a long, long time to deteriorate from normal use. The #715 reaches a more refined edge than the basic #16 corrugated style, but requires periodic sharpening (which I find a cinch using a small, long and thin scrap of coticule).

| Dovo's #48846 soldiers on as one of their oldest designs that's still in production, because it is time-tested and hard to improve upon for what it is. If you've got big, strong hands and are after a barber's shear that can handle lots of real estate without any service, this is your guy.. The 48 846's blades are traditionally ground with a ~35° cutting angle (Dovo's standard on traditional models) on the outer side of each blade. The #48's tempering of the steel is the 'dramatic' Ice Tempered method. The edge on these things will likely outlast you if you've been at the business of cutting hair for a president or two.

The Dovo 200 706 'Coupe Souple' is a classic style 7" stainless shear for professionals. Its blade edges produce a cutting angle of ~35°, Dovo's standard on traditional models, and not corrugated - this means that they will require regular refreshening (I recommend a small coticule 'slurry stone'), unlike the corrugated model above, but with a 'wedge' style of blade edge, they are extremely easy to hone, even for a novice. The hollow ground style of cutting edge is still what I'd consider easy to rehone, but then I am very experienced at this sort of thing. Wtih a tiny coticule slurry stone, you can easily keep the Coupe Souple running at full throttle for decades, even from your first try after heavy use has deteriorated the fine edge condition given by the folks in Solingen.

Sorry for the stock image above; the 2nd image showing the lovely sheath that's included is from stock, but they wrap these things up in waxy paper that's more complicated than a Rubik's cube. Keen Cut's only produced in this 5" size, is officially discontinued (not on pricelist, & no more production), but still has some manufactured stock left to distribute to earth...it will be missed a sweet lil pocket rocket.

|
By far our most popular series, the Dovo "Elitaire" comes in various lengths and styles and has a hollow ground cutting edge which has been honed and is razor sharp; instead of a straight line going up at a 35° angle from the point where the blade planes intersect, the Elitaire has an overall reduced angle that's flatter at the end and steeper towards the main body of the blade, just like on a straight razor. You'll get exceptionally-controlled cutting precision that's more immediate than the corrugated or un-honed hollow ground edge. Like any straight razor, the Elitaire will also eventually require maintenance more quickly than would the two less-refined corrugated or hollow ground (but not razor sharp) edge options above. I've had great success fiddling with these scissors by intentionally dulling them and then resharpening with a small, long, and thin coticule. The holes for your thumb and finger are lined with rubber. The Elitaires also have Dovo's "Micro Motion" feature, which is a Teflon-coated and spring-loaded pressure plate to hold the center screw. The Micro Motion gives the scissor's action a more responsive feeling, and it seems easier to start of finish action, so that you can expect to be able to control the very end of the cutting edge for trimming.

|
The Dovo "Spectral Red" 246 5585 is part of Dovo's übershears, with razor sharp and hollow ground blade cutting edges along with a semi-convex profile for the blades planes...well, I suppose being somewhatconvex, they're technically no longer blade planes, of course. This model's red-hued carbon-plasma coating gives an increased glide to the action-as great as the above Elitaire's movement is, this one is that notable bit smoother. The carbon-plasma coating's also supposed to quickly separate skin from metal to practically eliminate any risk of an allergic reaction from a mishap. It also has the famed Dovo "Micro Motion" Teflon-coated/spring-loaded pressure plate to hold the center screw, which gives a more responsive feel to the scissoring action and a certain ease to starting and finishing the scissor action. The convex blade surfaces are what really sets the Spectral Red (and the fully-convexed Master Class below) apart from the rest of the Dovo line. Convex blade faces allows precise 'slice cuts', where one points the scissor to the ground and opens the scissor but doesn't actually move the blades-instead relying upon the blades' exceptionally thin and sharp cutting edges to trim the hair which points to the ceiling. Just a smooth thrust of throttle with your hand/arm from ceiling to floor at sharp, low angles to the hair allows thinning by carving. It is a very modern technique, for a cutting edge scissor design. You can also cut the upright hair from the top, to knock down some excess density and loosen up the hair. I've never even seen someone do a 'slice cut', but then I can't exactly afford a studly $$$ haircut, either. It sure sounds neat. The Spectral Red 246 5585 is supplied with a bottle of lubricant, adjustment screw, and tin box. This 246 5585 is essentially the same scissor as the 2455585 unit above, but eschews the 245 5585's classic layout in favor of a newer-style 'lowered' profile and slightly offset shank design.

The Dovo "Slide Cut excel" 2000 556 is one of their most sophisticated models, with a razor-sharp hollow ground and honed edge that gives exceptionally-controlled cutting precision that's more immediate than the corrugated or un-honed hollow ground edges (as well as a higher need for resharpening, too). Try rubbing a wet coticule slurry stone right at the edges to keep them running at full throttle. Slide Cut's finished in a satin motif, and has a center screw which can be adjusted with the hands-no tools required. Entirely unique in the Dovo shears catalog, the #2000 556's unique hinge mechanism allows (as the name would imply) the easiest of slide cuts-the pivot point between the two scissor blades travels about a centimeter during the course of a normal cutting action, allowing "slide cuts", which are a sort of combination of the capacities of the conventional lines of shears and the semi-convex blades such as the "Master Class" shown directly above. Without exclusively cutting via traditional scissoring effect, you can barely move your thumb as you slice through upturned hair. Perhaps best of all, you'll have adjustable-tension "Micro Motion"; in fact this is the only "Micro-Motion" model with tool-free adjustable tension. Slide Cut excel's only made in a 5.5" size.

The Inversion 5449 40555 is supplied with a bottle of lubricant, adjustment screw, and tin box.

Dovo #44 & #46 Nose Scissors

![]() | While I'll still admit to preferring a highly-aggressive needle-point style cuticle scissor for daring to trim the very, very front of the insides of my nostrils, 1) I have a tiny nose and am fighting for tenths of millimeters and 2) I use two hands to do it and still feel that quite uncomfortable poke in the sensitive parts more often than I would if a surgeon friend did it. I'm sure my wife could do a better job if I could just bring myself to ask her of it...we're just not that close :-) And as the smiling chap to the left with the attractive olfactory party favor emerging can certainly attest, a specific scissor for cutting your nose (and ear) hair makes a ton more sense. The dainty Dovo #44 scissors (3.5" or 4" lengths, straight or bent blades) have compact, straight sides and flared, bulbous scissoring tips, and come in 5 models; standard matte-finish 3.5" straight-bladed #44356, polished #44355 version of the same thing, curved-bladed 3.5" #44359 (which has bent scissor blades so that when you're going straight up main street your hand's off to the side of your face a bit), 4" straight-bladed #44406, & 4" curved-bladed #44409. No matter which you choose, when they close they give wonderful control of a tiny cutting edge area with minimal 'scissoring' pressure needed to cut those nose/ear hairs. That flared design also 'buys you some space' in there from the actual point of scissoring cut, pushing sensitive tissue out of the way to make safe room for the cutting's occurrence. That's just what you'd want.

Worth a mention here that I find this the best CAREFUL nose scissor I've tried, for I always found the curved tips on the cuticle scissor that I used to prefer not helpful in this sideline work. I get up close and personal in front of the wife's specialty parabola makeup mirror, use the "off" hand to 1) help brace the scissor tips, 2) brace the dominant hand's wrist, and 3) open the nostrils to the max, and then point straight at the troublemakers. You're not going to come close to that kind of grooming perfection with the much safer rounded nose-born scissors by virtue of their design (which essentially makes it very hard to accidentally lacerate yourself), but if you want the tightrope here it is; official advice here is always to use tools as their makers intended.

#46 Nose Scissors (Nickel or Stainless Steel)
![]() | |
The Dovo 46400 (straight tips, above left) & 46409 (curved tips, above right) scissors shown above give you 0.5" additional working space from under your nose vs the 3.5" models...unlike any of the #44s shown above, however, these #46s have a nickel finish rather than stainless steel, and thus cannot withstand autoclave sterilization and are not for professional use.

The #43450 Beard/Mustache Scissor (Nickel) |
![]() |
| Dovo "Moustache" 43450 (Nickel Finish) The Moustache 43450 is a precision 4.5" scissor, and while my personal preference for working nose hair it was born for grooming beards and mustaches. By any measure of application, essentially you use the very last centimeter or so of scissoring motion to make the cuts. This is where this kind of scissor really shines.
