Simpsons has historically been the most esteemed of British premium shaving brushes, producing them with charming individual eccentricity. Simpsons brushes are made by hand, via archaic methods that could've just as easily taken place when Mark Twain was still putting pen to paper. They vary quite a bit; even within one specified model, you can expect variances of knot height, knot style, handle height/diameter/hue, even the little stamps that denote the names of the models. It's always been this way, and that's half the fun. While those expecting digital era repeatability may find it frustrating, it is the variance that endears me to them more than the other überbrushes whom long ago joined modern times. I can't say they're better, but Simpsons' line stands in stark contrast to any of the other super brands like Kent, Mühle, Plisson, RA Rooney, Shavemac, etc. It's neat that they're out there.
We stock 4 grades of Simpsons badger hair. The base model's 'pure badger', which we only carry on the entry-level Beaufort line. Most of their brushes come in Best Badger, a long hair with a soft, creamy tip. Due to the density and the hair's excellent properties, we believe Simpsons 'Best Badger' brushes to be a fine consumer value in extremely high quality brushes.
Simpsons' top grade's known as "Super Badger". It has a bit of a softer tip than the "Best Badger", with superior water and heat retention qualities that give a more luxurious, enveloping experience. I refer to it as having a bit more 'presence of knot'. The standard "Super Badger" hairs have 3 bands of color to them-these are the softest and highest-density knots Simpsons makes. We also try to stock Simpsons 2-band Super Badger hair, though that's always harder to source. The 2-band Super Badger hair's notably denser and springier than 'standard' 3-band Super Badger hair, and not quite every bit as soft upon the tips. Thicker at the base, you get less total hairs, too. Nonetheless, if you always build your lather directly on your face, you'll be hard pressed to find better price-no-object brushes than the 2-Band Super Badger.
Nominal measurements here (adjacent to the 'stock' photos) are nominal; they're adjacent to useless when you're dealing with a truly hand made object. Look @ the individual listings for boots-on-the-ground info, the brush vendor's equivalent of urban house-to-house retail warfare.
As Simpsons brush buyers are, ahem, a frequently particular lot, we list almost all models INDIVIDUALLY! It consumes unimaginably enormous quantities of office time-it is a royal pain in the arse. But you'll know exactly what you're getting.
We remain the sole vendor doing it this way for 15+ months because it's a quagmire. I chuckle reading "If you look at sites showing the individual Simpsons stock, you'll see..." on brush-centric internet forum discussions. Please correct me if there's another outfit doing it this way, for they deserve a tip of my cap!
Turning a profit's a goal here-don't hold that against us, as we'll not begrudge your aim to pay nothing. I believe all vendors pay the same for Simpsons, but some whom must never be named are trading longer term brand prestige for extreme liquidity of assets. Until Simpsons becomes a price-fixed brand (like all the rest of the big players in our world) so we may easily win your dollars on our superior service, we'll carry much less and not even feign to match the lower price of the aforeunmentioned competitor; I'd rather they rot on the shelves! These aren't double edge razor blades, for goodness sake, it is a complicated line requiring enormous quantities of time and effort. Less complicated & equally unprofitable wares to offer abound, so I've no doubt consumers will see less buying choices for the vaunted Simpsons name as this perpetuates.
NO RETURNS/EXCHANGES ON ANY INDIVIDUALLY-PHOTOGRAPHED SIMPSONS BRUSHES!!!!!
Furthermore, we will not provide exchange of brushes claimed to be shedding excessively. For months, with each and every such claim no matter how quick or how long after purchase, we allowed the customer to choose their pick of the remaining litter, mailed replacement to them, paid for old brush back to us, etc...we've had to stop this immediate-no-questions-asked replacing routine.
What led to the change? Well, after photographing individual stock 15-20% of Simpsons sales began reliably complained of shedding. I did not, and do not, believe such a percentage could be legitimate given the manufacturer's long history, but as a vendor we'd no way to legitimize/refute claims; in every case to the customers, 1) they had done nothing wrong and 2) the brush was shedding far too much to be normal. Pragmatically speaking towards customer service, either all or none are legitimate. We chose to take all and were trashed like a rental car. I'm sure it is shocking to find returns skyrocketed to the ~15-20% only once we began showing the individual stock.
If you believe (at an ~18% probability) the prior approach remains practical for the Simpsons brand and the only position to keep if truly committed to service as we'd present ourselves, I'd encourage you to contact the maker of the wares, acquire the retailer's costs, factor the duties/shipping/permits, and compare these final costs versus the market prices. It is a fiscal impossibility.
Progress-Vulfix is a truly world class service provider committed to customers, and one who will stand behind the quality of their products. They'll wish to see the brush in hand; that means you will need to post it off to them on the Isle of Man, currently ~$3.46-5.20 worth of USPS 1st Class Mail Int'l postage plus the costs of an envelope and your time. But if it is a truly defective knot (not influenced by mildew, overheated brittle stems, or other forms of user-influenced shedding), they'll replace that knot.

| The Simpsons Colonel X2L is
a medium-sized model kind of similar to me to the popular Commodores series seen just below (it seems a bit firmer). Perhaps we should have carried this brush all along-it really seems one of those rarer models that truly allows different styles of holding/lather making, much more so than the Commodores. The handle's widest point is right near the top, and there's a nice comfy gradual curve towards to bottom, so you can presumably either 1) squeeze with fingertips on curve and 'flick' brush for lather or 2) hold brush at widest point near top, with firm wrist and elbow/shoulder motions and handle protruding into cavity of palm (as with a Vulfix 2233-2236, for example).

Suffice it to say that "pure" badger hair has much of the exfoliation benefits I love in any good boar brush, but also comes with its particular little tingle I've never cared for...reminds me of my dear departed devilish lovebird Miggy, whom if I were lazing in the recliner adored alighting on my arm nearest the elbow to play Miggy's favorite game, "Miggy gets under your skin"...after making decided eye contact, he/she'd then proceed to bite me with 1% of his/her capacity to unearth a reaction. Ignore, and Miggy goes 2%. Sooner or later you'll say "Dammit, Miggy, stop it! That hurts!" and he/she'd tweet happily and fly away. Ah, how I miss that overbearing 2-ounce creature. I guess the point here is that while the pure badger isn't exactly painful, I'd classify it as mildly discomforting in a way that the even sandiest and youngest of boar models does not at all bother me. But to each their own; very heavy on the plus side of pure badger's ledger is that it'll hold a hell of a lot more water and heat than can any boar, which even with years under my belt I find I have to keep a reservoir of warm water nearby during the shave for rehydration. Let's dispense with the generic specs for Simpsons, they only cause confusion... Batch #2's here, six well-varied options, all of which will certainly demolish any soap you're tired of in a few shaves...these lift up and face lather from the very hardest of soaps which some men are hell-bent upon insisting to use despite the plethora of simpler lathers available us. |

The Simpsons Harvard Series, at least the smallest 3 we're now carrying, are a sort of smaller-scale sibling to the very popular Persian Jar series. #1 isn't much bigger than a teensy Wee Scot, and #3 is still certainly as small than the Persian Jar #1. The main difference in Harvard 1 through Harvard 3 (much like the Emperor series) is the size of the handle. But I dig on the little brushes, as those are the ones that are "easy to drive". Big knots are luxury bombs, no question, but they always consume more of your cream/soap and are harder to master for their ideal water/cream ratio...we only stock the Harvards in "Best Badger". I'm not even going to post "nominal" specifications anymore, as all we have to do is perpetually explain why any sample varies (the answer is because they're really made by hand) or why they'll vary from other retailers' specifications. Real boots-on-the-ground retail warfare, we'll just list the knot diameters/lofts of each piece every time, and when we get a new 0.1-gram-accurate scale we'll weigh each sample and publish that number, too. |

 | The Mühle RV Plastic Helicoid Brush Tube borrows from the best in the world of telescope eyepieces, but of course a much different size. This is a sturdy, vented plastic tube which twists open and closed, and has an internal space which accommodates most brushes one would practically choose to take on travels. The maximum outer dimensions are about 2x5", and internally it accepts brushes with handle diameters of up to 41mm. There's more internal height clearance than would be needed for any brush but a turnback, which of course has its own unique container. The RV tubes weigh just 1 ounce. Shipping it by itself is comparatively expensive and LOTS of folks have taken advantage of this, so I apologize that we have to offer it at two prices. | |
