The Dovo 918096 was a silvertip brush in the same pursuit as Simpsons’ Major and Vulfix’s Turnback (where the handle itself is the brush’s tube for travel), but using a push-fit assemblage instead of screw threads for the brush head and base. I’ve owned one >10yrs and it has never failed me on a trip, I take it everywhere. It will be a poorly missed SKU, because Dovo stopped making them, and it sold pretty well for us for 13yrs, a handful each month. What a pity. We have three pieces remaining at the time of this sentence, and I’ll be surprised if they’re here come 2023 AD.
Its brushed satin-finished steel finish was shared with the fine Dovo 499906 razor/brush stand; there’s no doubt it is a looker, though you pay a weight and price penalty for that sturdier, highly-refined metal. I wouldn’t choose it were I mountain climbing, but for a few ounces too much, you’ll likely love using it.
Every sample we’ve ever handled was a nearly perfect and fairly bulbous-canopied knot of silvertip badger hair. This shape of roof for the knot helps to make it have backbone, and combined with the highish loft helps dry a bit faster.
The knot was entirely weighed, filled, tied, glued, and set to base by hand by expert brushmakers. Dovo did this themselves; I myself have pictures of their hair bundles in the factory and the old fashioned scales and little anti-shape thingies for the knots and thread, so someone was in their factory’s brushes-and-woodworking sub-shop, producing knots by hand.
If you’re willing to pay this much and carry a bit heavy (135g!) and keep to the painterly-type lathering stroke necessary from this canopy, this brush is hard to beat among those born specifically to travelling. Badger hair certainly interacts with water much differently than does even the best synthetic knot made by man, it is a more luxurious and natural experience. Just shave the night before you’re packing up, shake and towel dry as best you can every bit of water out of the brush, hit the knot head a bit with a hair dryer if handy and if not than put the knot somewhere with real good circulation, and you’ll be fine by morning.
