I think we’ve jumped the shark as far as the flat/concave bevel thing goes, and people with some basic understanding of geometry don’t really debate in their head that there could be some meaningful-on-the-beard advantages to having a bevel that was concave instead of flat worth exploring.

However, many men reading this who might already agree on the concepts in theory have not really tried the concave bevel shaving thing much themselves, both for not wanting to buy an expensive custom lapping plate or find a similar shape “in the wild”, nor to have to suffer through reshaping their whetstones.   Manual labor stinks!

Well, that’s where this little guy comes in; it won’t need reshaping, and gives you that concave bevel for peanuts!

These little 4x1x1″ Bass wood block’s had one of its four 1×4″ surfaces shaped with “the Jarrod plate” and polished through 1000# sandpaper fineness.  The idea is that you’ll cut down pressure-sensitive-adhesive-backed sandpaper or lapping  film to size and affix it to this for an instant concave bevel making sharpening tool.  PSA films/papers come off easily and you just spritz it with isopropyl alcohol and rub with a strong paper towel and it will be ready for a new one.  I recommend dousing the block in isopropyl alcohol before affixing the film/paper, and then doing like window tint people do where you ‘chase the bubble’ and then let it sit 30mins before use.

It isn’t a part for the Space Shuttle; the little wood blocks aren’t exactly perfect in their 1x1x4″ cuts.    That’s OK, though, because straight razors aren’t perfect, and don’t forget that the wood block is an ellipse, not a cylinder; the center line of the wood block is ‘taller’ than the “railings”.
